When a package arrived from Hawke’s Bay, I was surprised to unwrap a bottle of Fiano. I wasn’t aware there was any planted in NZ but remembered the words of advice given to me when I moved here, ‘everything’s available, you just have to know where to look’.Jenny Dobson is the winemaker for Bryce and Adrienne Campbell who planted their fiano vineyard on the Ngatarawa Road in 2009. The 2013 BusHHawke Vineyard Bella’s Block Fiano has a tight minerally nose; some grapefruit peel and fresh almond. The palate is restrained, dry but with a lovely, very slightly bitter edge. Plenty of interest, the wine is more about texture and mouthfeel than just fruit.
Emma and I debated whether to open a couple of bottles of Italian Fiano to taste alongside but in the end thought that would be a futile exercise. A wine has to stand on its own merits and this one certainly does. Keenly priced (rrp$25).
