Established in 1973 by Hermann and Agnes Seifried, over the last 40-odd years the family (children Heidi, Christopher and Anna are now part of Team Seifried too) has crafted a range of strongly varietal wines that reflect their Nelson origins. NZ’s only producer of wurzer, the winery is a quiet achiever scooping the Champion Sauvignon Blanc and Champion Sparkling Wine at the national wine show.
With many wineries focussed on releasing icon/super premium/reserve bottlings, it is refreshing to taste three wines that are happy to sit in the ‘uncomplicated and delicious’ basket.

The 2020 Old Coach Road Gewurztraminer has a bright heady aroma of lychees and must with an almost muscat-like touch of grapeiness. Pretty and bright, there is a little sweetness which is offset with a tingly lift of acidity.
There is plenty of vibrant varietal character on the nose of the 2020 Sauvignon Blanc; snowpea, freshly cut grass, elderflower and lime, fleshed out with a little pink guava. Vivid and mouth-watering with a crisp, squeezed lime character.
The 2019 Pinot Noir is a true reflection of the warm settled season; beautifully ripe damson and black cherry fruit, with a background of nicely judged tannin and a light seasoning of oak. Not a wine for the long haul, but one that offers plenty of upfront juicy appeal.
These new releases from Nelson’s Seifried Estate are delightfully undemanding, delivering plenty of flavour with just the right amount of interest. Extraordinarily well priced as ever.
